School Playground Design

There are plenty of points to consider when designing outdoor spaces…

At Valley we believe a recreational space should primarily be practical, fulfilling the requirements and aspirations of the particular organisation. Secondly we consider accessibility and availability, with a target to ensure that the outdoor space is available 365 days of the year! We also need to consider the user age range for correct specification of materials - for example our early years areas which need to be stimulating and safe play areas for children. Always in mind too is the surroundings to ensure our projects blend with the local environment and property style. Here at Valley Projects we have many years of experience and plenty of fresh ideas to implement in your project.

Playground Design Considerations

  • Surfacing: Choose a suitable surface for your specific needs such as soft rubber matting, bark chippings, timber decking and many more.

  • Play Equipment: Get the most out of your budget by choosing wisely. Children are often satisfied with simpler inexpensive activities than we might expect!

  • MUGA’s (Multi-use Games Areas): Create a multi-use sports pitch to facilitate multiple games such as football, tennis and basketball for older children.

  • Early Years Areas: Each stage of a child’s development requires a different set of considerations. Games and activities need to be stimulating and stretch a child’s imagination and experience of the world around them.

  • Safety: Use of soft surfaces and limiting the heights that children can climb to is important, although some argue that it is important for children to learn by their mistakes and cuts, bumps and bruises are an essential part of growing up. However fencing and security to keep children safe from malicious intruders is of the highest importance.

  • Storage: Bespoke sheds, shelving and structures to store toys and play equipment can be an integral part of a design.
