Lord Wandsworth College Resin Bound Gravel Surfacing

Phase Two

Lord Wandsworth College is a progressive co-educational independent boarding and day school for ages 11-18, set in 1200 acres of countryside in North Hampshire.

As part of a recent refurbishment and extension of the Dining room and Kitchen building, external areas of pedestrian access surrounding the building required resurfacing.

The existing tarmac surfacing had suffered from various refurbishment related groundworks. Most areas required attention prior to the finish surfacing including some 35 inspection and service duct covers to be reset to ensure the best possible finish could be achieved.

Groundwork also included complete excavation and reinstatement of a wide pedestrianised walkway to the side of the Dining Room, complete with installation of a sawn-granite edgings.

Valley had successfully completed a resin bound gravel surfacing for the college’s courtyard in 2017, so were delighted to be favoured once again with the contract to address the surfacing for this new prestigious project.

Phase one

As part of the College’s masterplan, areas of external access were pedestrianised including a large central courtyard.

This Courtyard was previously surfaced with bitumen based dressing which had caused issues during warm weather, melting and scuffing.

The College first approached Valley in 2016 and we worked closely with them to provide various options for surfacing - resulting in Resin Bound Gravel being chosen as the surface to be used not only on this project but throughout the rest of the strategic plan.

The existing levels of the courtyard where such that groundworks and resurfacing were required in order for smooth transition of levels to adjoining thresholds and surfaces.

One specific stipulation which was made was to have as few joins as possible in the new surfacing. Our skilled and hardworking teams managed to complete the whole area of nearly 1000m2 in three shifts leaving only 2 neat joins with an Aluminum edging.

The College have been unreserved in their approval of the works completed.
